What is the Ivy league?

The Ivy League refers to the 8 most prestigious US universities, wellknown worldwide because they are ranked among the best universties in the world.
Inside you find Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia. All of them are in New England and, except for Cornwell, the other seven were founded by the English, during the US colonial period.
What does mean "Ivy"? Take a look to the picture. It's about the ivied walls on the building, so british I guess. Planting the ivy was a customary class day ceremony at many colleges in the eighteen's century.
